What Mahamadou Diop’s Coach Told SOTM About SDSU

San Diego State appears to have made a strong impression on 2027 prospect Mahamadou Diop.
In a conversation with Sports on the Mesa, San Gabriel Academy head coach Danny Piepoli spoke highly of both SDSU and where the Aztecs currently stand in Diop’s recruitment. Piepoli is listed as the head coach of SGA’s boys basketball program.
“SDSU definitely [is] an amazing place with an amazing culture and will be in his top 3 for sure,” Piepoli told SOTM.
That doesn’t mean a decision is imminent. Piepoli emphasized that Diop is still going through the recruiting process and deciding where he will attend next year. But for SDSU, being firmly in the top three is a significant development as the Aztecs continue their pursuit.

When asked what Aztec fans should know about Diop beyond basketball, Piepoli had even stronger praise.
“He’s an amazing player and talent but an even better person. Kind, funny, smart and caring!”
Piepoli finished with a simple assessment: “Will be a great addition to any program.”
For SDSU, the takeaway is straightforward: the Aztecs made an impression, they’re in the top three, and this recruitment is very much alive.
